In the deal that keeps on giving, Bobby Bonilla, the former MLB All-Star who is currently receiving a bumper compensation agreement from his former team the New York Mets, has raked in even more cash by turning the physical contract into an NFT. The auction took place via NFT marketplace Goldin on August 6th, with the winning bid reaching a valuation of $180,000.

In addition to receiving the infamous contract and its accompanying 1/1 Bobby Bonilla NFT,  the single winner will also receive a 30 minute Zoom call with the man himself, as well as Dennis Gilbert, the agent who brokered the staggering deal. They will receive a signed baseball, a game-used bat from Bonilla’s personal collection, and a day trip to New York wherein they will partake in batting practice, attend a Mets game, and dine with Bonilla.

For context, the deal of focus here is one which saw the Mets commit to paying Bonilla $1.19 million every year from 2011 to 2035 ($29.8 million in total), as opposed to giving him the $5.9 million they owed him. The annual payments are always made on July 1st, which has subsequently led to the baseball community dubbing the date ‘Bobby Bonilla Day’.

With these monumental figures already in play, it can be assumed that the revenue gained from the NFT isn’t going to substantially change Bonilla’s life, so it will be interesting to see what the former All-Star decides to do with the money.
