Still hot from their recent Second Trip, Otherside unveils a new option for ‘expanding’ Otherside deeds and decoupling Kodas from plots, all tying into an upcoming game called Legends of the Mara!

Otherside ramps up their activity with a new feature that lets players convert their Otherdeeds and mint special NFTs along the way! This has broken the plots up into two collections, the original Otherdeeds, and Otherdeeds Expanded.

Expanding an Otherdeed involves claiming a Vessel. One may be claimed for each deed. The process burns the original NFT, issues a new NFT with the same stats in the collection Otherdeed Expanded, airdrops a random Vessel NFT to the owner, and, if a Koda is present on the plot, airdrops a Koda NFT as well. This also updates the metadata on the new Otherdeed to include a Koda Origins Obelisk Piece.

Vessels are inhabited by Shades. There are three basic types – Hunter, Farmer, and Enchanter. Each one will have a different role. They will hatch into ‘Mara’, who, along with the Koda NFTs, will be important for the upcoming gameplay.

This is not a required process for Otherdeed holders. However, the Otherside teams says that it is the key to unlocking future game experiences, including the Legends of the Mara!

What is Legends of the Mara?

Otherside has always been about mutable NFTs that grow and change based on the owner’s actions. And it looks like they will continue this philosophy with Legends of the Mara!

We don’t have a lot of details about the actual gameplay for Legends of the Mara, but we do have a some information. It all starts with the Vessels, which hatch Mara of the associated type after a period of hibernation. Mara can ingest a ‘seasonal catalyst’, and evolve into Kodamara, with traits taken from the Catalysts. The game will run in seasons, with different catalyst effects from each season.

Players also harvest Fragments with Farmer Mara from the sediment layer of their Otherdeed. They type of Sediment determines the type of Fragments harvested. These Fragments are then fed to the Mara, which also affects how they evolve. It’s unclear if the Fragments and Catalysts are the same thing.

Beyond all of this info, we don’t really know what this game will entail. Is it just growing and feeding and evolving the Mara? Or is there a greater goal? Hopefully we will learn more soon. Supposedly the first Mara will arrive this Summer!

What is the Otherside?

Otherside is a Metaverse project by Yuga Labs, the founders of the Bored Ape Yacht Club. It is a world of floating islands, each one an NFT Otherdeed (100,000 in total). Otherdeeds come in different tiers, which affects their appearance and their resource production. Each plot can produce up to four different resources. Some lands also come with special Artifacts or Koda visitors. The land NFTs are dynamic, designed to change and evolve based on the owner’s actions.

Otherside will eventually release tools that allow Otherdeed holders to shape and create their own experiences on their plots.
