Following up on their recent addition of SAND staking on the Polygon network, The Sandbox announced an upcoming SAND airdrop on Polygon for all land owners. The amount of SAND received depends on the number of lands held, what sale the lands are from, and how long they’ve been held in the same wallet.
A while back The Sandbox announced its intention to migrate most, if not all, of their ecosystem over to the Polygon network due to the transaction fees on the Ethereum network. They started off by enabling staking rewards for Sandbox-MATIC holders and reducing the rewards earned on the ETH staking. Now they folllow that up with a simple airdrop to give everyone with at least one land plot some free SAND on Polygon. The snapshot was taken on December 20th, 2021, so don’t run out and buy a plot now and expect an airdrop!
Every land is worth one point. If the land was from one of the three presales, it receives additional points (up to 3). The older the plot, the more valuable it is. If you actually purchased a plot during on of those presales, AND you have held onto it since then, that land receives a ‘Diamond Hand’ bonus and has its points doubled! Interestingly, the size of the land seems to make no difference. A single plot is just as valuable as an estate.
Based on each landowner’s total score for all of their lands, they will receive a SAND airdrop on the Polygon network. No action required on their part. Pretty sweet! Especially since SAND is going for about $5 USD each at the moment!
The Polygon Network
One of the great things about the Polygon network is that it uses the same address as your ETH wallet. So all you have to do is put the network info into Metamask, switch over, and access your SAND!
To connect to Polygon with Metamask, click on the network selection dropdown and select Add Network. Then enter the following details:
Network Name: Polygon Mainnet
New RPC URL: https://polygon-rpc.com/
Chain ID: 137
Currency Symbol: MATIC
Block Explorer: https://polygonscan.com/
Once that’s set, you can just switch back and forth between ETH and Polygon anytime you want! For anyone thinking of moving funds to Polygon, perhaps to participate in liquidity mining, expect to pay an initial transfer fee. But once you’re on Polygon, the fees are extremely reasonable.
What do you think will be the next steps Sandbox takes in this migration? Bridges for land plots? Sandbox NFTs on Polygon? It would certainly be nice to have an opportunity to acquire Sandbox NFTs without paying an extra $30+ on top of the NFT price! Some of the migration could be pretty complex, so it will be interesting to see the solutions they decide on. Whatever they choose, this move is great for both The Sandbox, and the Polygon network.
What is The Sandbox?
The Sandbox is one of the blockchain-powered virtual worlds currently in development. The Sandbox consists of customizable lands with voxel based entities. Visually it will remind many gamers of Minecraft, as both games have this Lego-inspired look to them. However, players are able to buy virtual land and implement any form of monetization. These virtual lands can become mini-games, adventures, virtual shops, extensions of actual webshops, a space for social gatherings, and so on.
The Sandbox provides free tools for developers, gamers and content creators. Creators can use VoxEdit to create voxel-based objects for use in-game. And with the Game Maker users can make all sorts of interactive experiences! The Sandbox will also create a meta gaming experience. Players can for example do daily quests or weekly quests for their guild. This will earn players SAND, which they can sell or use to buy in-game items or virtual land.
