The next expansion for Splinterlands, called Riftwatchers, opens up the first pack sales on September 15th. Sold as ‘Rift Gems’, Riftwatchers will include legendary airdrops as packs sell, and a special promo card, only available to those who purchase during the pre-sale period!
Riftwatchers is the latest expansion from Splinterlands. Featuring 43 new cards, a new Ability, Epic Summoners, and Legendary creatures for every Splinter, this is likely to be a very popular expansion. With only three million packs available, this smaller-sized set has a much lower print run than Chaos Legion, but it still significantly higher than older expansions.
Riftwatchers packs, or ‘Rift Gems’ will be sold for SPS tokens only, $5 USD worth. They also require Vouchers – one per pack. Vouchers come from owning Validator Licenses and staking SPS tokens. Each Gem contains five Riftwatchers cards.
All of the SPS tokens from the sale are sent to Splinterlands DAO for future distribution in the ecosystem. So this is not a money grab by the Splinterlands team. In addition, those who are staking SPS tokens could potentially earn enough tokens and vouchers to purchase packs without any additional funds, which is kind of cool!
Riftwatchers Expansion
The Riftwatchers sale begins on September 15th, though the first week is considered a pre-sale period. The first 500 thousand packs are referred to as pre-sale packs. These packs offer a special airdrop to everyone who purchases one or more. Like the Dr. Blight promo card, this airdrop will be the only way to acquire this particular card (aside from buying it from other players on the market). Each pre-sale pack purchased offers a 2% chance to receive a copy of the card, with one card guaranteed for every 50 packs purchased. Those who buy 1000 packs during the pre-sale receive a guaranteed, gold foil version.
In addition to the presale airdrop, Riftwatchers continues the trend of adding new legendary drops as the packs sell out. This edition includes four additional legendary card airdrops for pack purchasers.
Players won’t be able to open packs or use their new cards until the Riftwatchers set goes live. The planned live date is September 22nd.
Six new Epic summoners arrive in Riftwatchers, one for each element. In addition, we receive a new card ability called Fury. Creatures with Fury do double damage to creatures with Taunt, potentially providing an effective way of tearing through that annoying defensive unit! The team says that the Riftwatchers expansion tends to contain higher-mana creatures, increasing the roster opportunities for those high mana battles!
What is Splinterlands?
Splinterlands is a play-to-earn, trading card game running on the Hive blockchain. The game plays in a browser. And thanks to cross-chain functionality, cards and tokens can be traded on both the Ethereum and Wax blockchains. Splinterlands also has a governance token, called SPS.
Splinterlands is a cross between a deck-building game and an auto-battler. Players use their cards to build a combat lineup based on the rules of the match. Then, once both sides submit their teams, the cards run in auto-battle mode until only one team remains. Players earn rewards for winning matches, and can also earn additional rewards through Daily Quests, Seasonal rewards, and a recurring, two-week leaderboard contest.
