Following in a growing trend of NFTs based on popular IPs, the iconic TV show Thunderbirds will be launching a generative art drop of NFTs. This drop is thanks to a new partnership between  ITV Studios and Reality+.

A Legacy Franchise in Web3

On the surface, the Thunderbirds is an NFT community that is based on the iconic program. But a deeper dive shows that it is much more than this; the Thunderbirds consists of a community of fans, an NFT project that is tied to one of the biggest metaverses in the world, and a charity DAO. Led by a team of tech and art enthusiasts, this project is taking on the complex task of bringing a legacy franchise into web3.

Earlier this month, the project concluded its free mint pass which gave away 5,000 mint passes ahead of its NFT sale. Moving forward, Thunderbirds intends to hold an art auction of seven 1/1 artworks on Virtua and a rescue mission art initiative that will give rewards to deserving projects. Perhaps its most ambitious future project will be its incoming Web 3.0 game called “Thunderbirds: Rescue Missions”

The NFT Drop

All these, of course, start with its newly-announced NFT sale. Many fans of the original Thunderbirds show from the 1960s will remember its impressive vehicles, locations and character artwork. Now, they will be able to get their hands on these different elements from the show as NFTs.

The assets will be released on September 30, 2022. The NFTs to be released are part of the Thunderbirds: International Rescue Club and grant special benefits to their holders. These include a unique avatar, access to free drops, exclusive merchandise, and so on.

According to Neil Bowler, Controller of Games at ITV, this is a chance for Thunderbirds fans to connect with their favourite franchise.

Thunderbirds is adored by millions of fans of all ages around the world, so we’re really excited to announce our partnership! Reality+ has a strong track record of creating amazing entertainment experiences using blockchain technology, utilising only the best content and most sustainable production techniques – we can’t wait to give fans the opportunity to use these NFTs to enter the Metaverse as Thunderbirds characters for the very first time,” he says.

Tons of Utility

There is a heavy utility aspect to this as all the NFTs will be generative, giving users the chance to create 3D avatars that can be used in The Sandbox metaverse.

The project will also give holders the opportunity to take part in real world “Rescue Missions”, in which funds generated via the Thunderbirds: International Rescue Club’s NFT sales will be used to aid charities and good causes around the world.

Thunderbirds: International Rescue Club is an international organisation set up to change the world, one rescue mission at a time. The project has raised £7,500 of their fundraising goal and as part of the launch this week 20% of all future sales go directly towards helping charities like Dobrich Dog Rescue in Bulgaria. The community will help to decide what future missions Thunderbirds: International Rescue Club undertake.
