As a society, we’ve been trying to make the Metaverse concept a reality for nearly three decades. We had the Virtual Boy, Sega VR, Virtuality, and most recently, Oculus Rift.
The Metaverse is a digital universe where people can interact with each other and three-dimensional objects in a realistic way. It’s the Holy Grail for gamers, businesses, and techies alike.
And while we’re still a ways off from the Metaverse being a reality, plenty of companies and venture capitalists are investing in the technology needed to make it happen.
Here are the top 5 venture capitalists investing in Metaverse technology:
Verizon Ventures
Let’s start with Verizon Ventures. Now, you’ve certainly heard about its parent company, Verizon. They’re one of the largest telecommunications providers in the world. But, what you might not know is that their investment arm, Verizon Ventures, has been investing in Metaverse technology for years.
Last year, they invested in StatusPRO, a sports-orientated AR/VR company. Verizon Ventures also supported YBVR, the VR video distribution platform, with a $1.5 million donation. Lastly, they’ve recently struck a partnership deal with Meta to develop 5G-powered experiences in the Metaverse.
Play Ventures
Then we have Play Ventures, one of the most talked-about players in the VR world. Since the company’s inception four years ago, Play Ventures have supported over two dozen startups, including MetaSoccer, Blackpool, and Trailblazer.
Recently, they’ve set aside $75 million, which they plan on investing in the development of Blockchain games over the next few years. If everything goes to plan, the games will take place in the Metaverse of the future.
Hiro Capital
Hiro is a European venture capital firm with big plans for the Metaverse. Originally founded in 2018 by Ian Livingstone, Cherry Freeman, and Luke Alvarez, it has become one of the most active investors in the VR/AR industry.
Back in 2019, they set up their first Metaverse fund of over $130 million, and three years later, another one of $340 million. So far, Metaverse-based companies like Twin Suns, Zwift, and FVRV all have benefited from Hiro’s investments.
FOV Ventures
Now, FOV Ventures is somewhat different from the other venture capitalists on this list. They were founded by Dave Haynes, who made his name working with HTC and creating multiple startups, including SoundCloud.
Dave received the XR Investor of the Year award just a few years ago, and now, his focus is on the Metaverse. In 2022, he set up a €25 million fund to help early-stage startups working on Metaverse technology.
Metaverse Ventures
In the last spot, we have the aptly named Metaverse Ventures. They’re a seed-stage venture fund set up by a group of entrepreneurs, academics, and investors.
They’ve invested in a wide range of Metaverse-based startups, including Vegas City, Decentral Games, and Artie.
Closing Thoughts
These are the top 5 venture capitalists investing in Metaverse technology. Each of them has different strategies and approaches, but they all share one goal: to make the Metaverse a reality.
