The British Museum is collaborating with French NFT platform LaCollection to launch a selection of 20 NFTs based on the artworks of renowned watercolorist, J.M.W. Turner. The auction follows on from the collaborations’ successful launch of Katushika Hokusai NFTs, which attracted an audience from over 120 countries.

The private sale of the NFTs will run on LaCollection between February 8th – 9th, with the general market sale running between February 9th and March 4th. The 20 NFTs will be sold across three scarcity levels, with 9 being Ultra Rare (two editions), 7 being Super Rare (ten editions), and 4 being an Open Edition, where a maximum of 99 editions will be sold over a 24–48-hour period.

With rewarding its community being a cornerstone of the LaCollection project, the sale of Ultra Rare and Open Edition NFTs will be exclusively available to existing community members who have purchased an NFT from the Katsushika Hokusai release, whose private sale remains open until January 31st. The sale of a final Ultra Rare NFT of Turner’s ‘A Storm’ (1823) painting will also be made exclusively available to anyone who purchased a Turner NFT during the sales window.

The 20 works within the collection come from a rarely exhibited set left by former director of Christie’s Auction House, Robert Wylie Lloyd, who stipulated that the collection could only be exhibited for two weeks in February or by special request, and should never be lent.

JMW Turner (1775-1851) is referred to as ‘the painter of sunshine,’ due to his curiosity in colours in his landscapes and seascapes. He is also known as the first ‘modern’ artist because of the influence that his messy and expressive style has had on many artists today.
