Social media conglomerate ‘Meta’ is reportedly making plans to integrate NFTs into its popular social media subsidiaries, Facebook and Instagram. The adoption of NFT functionality on such platforms would indicate the largest show of mainstream support for NFTs to date, helping free the asset from its controversial label and solidifying its place in the digital world.
The plans are said to be ‘at an early stage and could yet change,’ however, as of now, the teams at Facebook and Instagram are thought to be working on a prototype which will allow users to mint NFTs on the platforms, whilst readying a feature which is similar to one seen on Twitter, where users are allowed to display NFTs as their profile picture. There is also speculation that the conglomerate as a whole is planning to launch its own Meta NFT marketplace.
This is not the first time we are hearing about Meta’s potential adoption of NFT technology, as hints were made by CEO Mark Zuckerberg back in October when his livestream talk touched on issues surrounding the conglomerates’ need to support ownership of digital goods and NFTs. Eyebrows were raised in December when Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri discussed the platform’s intent to delve into NFTs and find ways to make them more accessible to wider audiences.
Despite such exciting speculation arising, there has been no official word from Meta regarding its future leveraging of NFT technologies.
