Erstwhile celebration of all-things music, MTV, will honour the virtual realm in its future Video Music Awards. This year, adding ‘Best Metaverse Performance’ to its roster of achievements within the entertainment industry.

Over the course of the pandemic, the metaverse blossomed into a viable alternative to the in-person performance, bringing a level of interactive entertainment back to those confined at home during the outbreak of the pox. Now however, as the world reopens, these pioneering forms of fan participation look set to stay. So, recognizing this brand-new medium of live entertainment, the former music channel has opted to honour the best virtual shows held during the year.

This year’s nominees feature pop staples, Ariana Grande, Twenty One Pilots, Justin Bieber, BTS, BLACKPINK and Charli XCX. Disappointingly however, the list of candidates is overrun by non-crypto native platforms such as Roblox, PUBG and Minecraft, which recently condemned itself to a life in the Web2 wilderness.

Despite this however, the door remains open for future Web3 dominance within the category, as development gathers pace and more stars jump on board. Consequently, for us casual spectators, an epic battle of Web2 vs Web3 will play out on the grandest of world stages.

Time to grab the popcorn and watch the events unfold!
