Early crypto adopter and contentious Web3 figure Ross Ulbricht has announced the launch of his second NFT collection. The founder of the now-defunct Silk Road platform will launch the collection from the confines of his prison cell, as he continues to serve his double life plus 40 years sentence without parole, for his involvement in the controversial online marketplace.
The collection is titled the ‘Growth Collection,’ and will be auctioned at the Bitcoin22 conference via Scarce.City in Miami on April 6th-8th. It will consist of four physical oil paintings and one hand-drawn animation (embedded with 318 hand drawn frames), with each accompanied by a Bitcoin NFT with a Bitcoin-tokenized certificate of authenticity.
The collection also pays homage to Bitcoin’s founder Satoshi Nakamoto, whose 47th birthday is on the day before the event.
Ulbricht has gathered much attention since first being apprehended for his operation and ownership of the website, which he was accused of enabling its users to buy and sell illegal drugs and other unlawful goods and services anonymously back in 2013. However, he insists that the collection’s focus shouldn’t be on his conviction, and rather, how he believes he can still make difference despite his seemingly indefinite incarceration.
“We can look more broadly at making the whole system just, rather than focusing just on me, that is as it should be. There is a lot of work to do…All of this has brought a new spark to my life. I have direction and purpose and I feel like I can make a difference again. The more money we raise the more good we can do. I have put my heart, soul, and mind into this collection, and I am really looking forward to unveiling it to you”.
October 1st of this year will mark the 10th year of Ulbricht’s highly contested prison sentence, which for many, is 10 years too long. At the time of writing, a little over 475,000 people have pledged their solidarity with the crypto pioneer through participating in a clemency petition which has been set up to fight for his freedom.
Despite being locked away for such time, the Austin-born tech wizard was also able to launch an incredibly successful ‘Ross Ulbricht Genesis Collection’ late last year, which generated $6.27 million at auction during Art Basel Miami.
