From bedroom walls, to office picture frames, to being sticky-taped to the inside of college lockers. These are just some of the ways that sports fans over the last 60 years have kept coveted images of their favourite sports stars who feature as the front cover of the infamous Sports Illustrated magazine.

With that in mind, and as we continue to tighten the tension on our catapult into Web3,  the New York-based magazine has decided that it’s time for these memorabilia items to begin seeking refuge in the digital realm, which has led to the launch of their NFT collection, the ‘Sports Illustrated Covers Collection‘.

In a three-way partnership between NFT platform OneOf, award-winning 3D animation artist Jonathan Winbush, and the owners of Sports Illustrated, Authentic Brands Group, the first release of NFTs from the collection will feature three of the most prolific figures in NFL history, Jerry Rice, Emmitt Smith, and Dick Butkus. Along with an iconic and career-defining magazine cover of theirs, the NFTs will also come with a reimagined, 3D-animated version of their cover.

In an effort to reduce the barriers of entry for fans, and so that they can expand their interest in sports into that of NFTs, pieces in the Sports Illustrated Collection will begin at a price point of $25, with each athlete’s magazine cover having multiple tiers of rarity. More details will be released in due course, however, we can expect the collection to be dropped during the aftermath of paramount event in the NFL calendar, the Super Bowl, which takes place on February 13th.

Future releases from the collection will showcase the iconic magazine covers of the likes of Muhammad Ali, Mia Hamm, Billie Jean King, Wayne Gretzky, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Shaquille O’Neal, who has already launched himself into the world of NFTs via his The Eras of Dominance collection.
