The first of seven Quentin Tarantino ‘Pulp Fiction’ NFTs has sold for a whopping $1.1 million. The sale defies efforts from the producers behind the cult classic, ‘Miramax,’ who are trying to stop the collection through a dispute over intellectual property rights.
The NFT collection, coined ‘Tarantino NFTs,’ offers seven original and handwritten screenplays from the 1994 film, all of which taking the form as mintable, one-of-a-kind NFTs. In collaboration with SCRT Labs, the rare scripts also come with audio commentary from Tarantino himself, who walks listeners through the scene’s significance, whilst also uncovering hidden anecdotes.
‘Royale with Cheese,’ the iconic conversational car scene featuring John Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson was the first scene to be sold as an NFT from the collection, with the lucky buyers being crypto collective, AnonDAO.
Upcoming auctions await the remaining six NFTs, who will each have an auction lasting 24 hours (or until their target price is reached) between January 24th and January 31st on the ‘Tarantino NFTs’ website. The remaining NFTs are based on the scenes, ‘Pumpkin and Honey Bunny,’ ‘Foot Massage,’ ‘Check Out the Big Brain on Brett,’ ‘Captain Koons Monologue – The Gold Watch,’ ‘Bring Out the Gimp,’ and ‘Last Scene: Coffee Shop – Ezekiel 25:17’.
The excitement surrounding the collection may be short-lived however, as Miramax are making valiant efforts to cease the eligibility of the NFT collection. The film studio has filed a lawsuit claiming IP rights over the content, with their lawyers stating: “Whatever limited rights Mr. Tarantino has to screenplay publication, they do not permit the minting of unique NFTs associated with Miramax’s intellectual property, and his contrary position is the subject of a pending lawsuit”.
